The objective of the game is to find their way home after becoming lost in space. Navigating a procedurally generated universe, the player encounters a randomized environment that enhances the open-ended and diverse exploration experience.

Ship movement adheres to realistic physics, necessitating the use of gravitational slingshots for navigation. Becoming proficient in travel poses a significant learning curve.

The player interacts with alien entities who extend quests. Decisions range from assisting, ignoring, attacking, to even betraying quest-givers. For instance, when an alien tasks the player with transporting a box, the option to open and pilfer its contents exists. Daedalic, renowned for narrative-focused point-and-click adventure games, conceived this title as a roguelike space role-playing game, drawing inspiration from Star Control II and Starflight. Writer Richard Cobbett aimed to enhance alien culture portrayal and interaction.
