The Legend:

Introduction:

"Legend" is a side-scrolling hack and slash beat 'em up video game developed by Arcade Zone and originally released in North America by Seika Corporation in April 1994. It later made its way to Europe through Sony Electronic Publishing on December 21 of the same year for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. This game holds the distinction of being the first creation solely crafted by Carlo Perconti and Lyes Belaidouni at Arcade Zone, a duo who would later go on to establish Toka and HyperDevbox Japan, respectively.

Set in the fictional medieval kingdom of Sellech, players assume the roles of knight warriors Kaor and Igor in an endeavor to thwart the corrupt Clovis, the king's son, who aims to harness power from the imprisoned soul of malevolent tyrant Beldor. This wicked act would grant him control over the land. Taking inspiration from high fantasy medieval-themed beat 'em up arcade games by Capcom and Sega, Legend originated from the minds of Perconti and Belaidouni, who sought to bring their own action-oriented vision to life.

Despite its initial release on the Super NES, Legend received a mixed reception from critics. While its graphics earned praise, its gameplay was often criticized for being repetitive and lacking depth. While no direct sequel emerged, Toka developed a remake titled "Legend" for the PlayStation. In 2015, the original game was introduced to Microsoft Windows by independent developer and publisher Piko Interactive. Additionally, a spiritual successor named Konan was under development for the Atari Jaguar by Perconti and Belaidouni, though it was ultimately left unfinished and unreleased.

Key Features of "Legend":

  1. Side-Scrolling Action: Embark on an arcade-style hack and slash adventure reminiscent of classics like Golden Axe and The King of Dragons.
  2. Dynamic Duo: Control the valiant knight warriors Kaor and Igor as they traverse seven stages within the kingdom of Sellech.
  3. Varied Combat Abilities: Wield swords, deliver powerful kicks, and unleash magic spells to combat foes. Shields can be used to block enemy attacks.
  4. Special Techniques: Execute advanced maneuvers like jump slashes through button combinations, with potential health costs.
  5. Bonus Rounds and Customization: After each level, partake in bonus rounds for item collection, and tailor your character's appearance and gameplay difficulty in the options menu.

Gameplay

The game's narrative unfolds within the kingdom of Sellech, where the malevolent Beldor subjected the land to chaos for a millennium. With united effort, heroes managed to imprison Beldor's soul and restore peace. However, Clovis, the corrupt heir to the throne, seeks to resurrect Beldor's power to conquer the realm. Players guide Kaor and Igor on their quest to thwart Clovis's nefarious plan. As they journey across the land, they meet allies, battle enemies, and finally confront Clovis, securing victory and banishing Beldor's soul from the world.

Carlo Perconti, a freelance graphic designer for companies like Loriciels and Titus Interactive, teamed up with Lyes Belaidouni, who held a similar role at the latter. Their shared passion for action-oriented games led them to establish Arcade Zone, their own game development company. Their creation, Legend, was conceived as a fast-paced beat 'em up, inspired by renowned titles like Knights of the Round, Golden Axe, and The King of Dragons.

Working under challenging circumstances with limited resources, the two co-founders dedicated two to three months to develop Legend, serving as a passion project. The game was crafted from scratch, with no financial backing or official Nintendo development kit. Perconti programmed the game, while Belaidouni created all the artwork using Deluxe Paint on Amiga, later transferring it to PC. After completion, the game was showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Development and release

Initially released in North America in April 1994 by Seika Corporation and later in Europe by Sony Electronic Publishing on December 24, Legend found success, despite lacking a Japanese release due to market limitations. The game's popularity resulted in a 2015 port to Microsoft Windows by Piko Interactive, followed by a global re-release of the original Super NES version two years later.

Critics praised the game's boss design and visual aesthetics. However, some expressed concerns about its gameplay variety and perceived lack of depth, especially considering the crucial role of variety in beat 'em up games.
